Children’s Orthodontics in Oviedo, FL

Give your child the gift of a healthy smile with early orthodontic intervention.

Not every child needs early orthodontic treatment—but for some, starting at the right time can make a dramatic difference. Phase 1 (interceptive) treatment at Weeks Orthodontics in Oviedo addresses developing jaw and bite problems while your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, often preventing more complex treatment later. Dr. Travis A. Weeks evaluates children as young as age 7 to determine whether early intervention is beneficial.

What Is Phase 1 (Early) Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase 1 treatment, also called interceptive orthodontics, targets specific developmental problems while a child is between approximately ages 7 and 10—when they still have a combination of baby teeth and emerging permanent teeth. The goal isn’t to create a perfect smile at age 8. Instead, Phase 1 treatment addresses underlying issues that, if left untreated, would become significantly more difficult (and expensive) to correct later.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, enough permanent teeth have erupted for an orthodontist to detect developing problems that aren’t yet apparent to parents or general dentists. Importantly, most children evaluated at age 7 will not need Phase 1 treatment—they’ll simply be monitored until the right time for comprehensive treatment.

Signs Your Child May Need Early Treatment

Parents in the Oviedo area should schedule an orthodontic evaluation if their child exhibits any of the following:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth (first tooth lost before age 5 or still has baby teeth at age 13)
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing or chronic snoring
  • Thumb or finger sucking beyond age 5
  • Protruding front teeth that are at risk for injury
  • Crowding evident as early permanent teeth come in
  • Teeth that don’t come together properly when biting
  • Jaw shifting or clicking
  • Speech difficulties related to jaw or tooth position
  • Facial asymmetry

If you notice any of these signs in your child, don’t wait. An early evaluation at our Oviedo office can determine whether intervention now will benefit your child’s long-term dental development.

Conditions Phase 1 Treatment Addresses

Phase 1 treatment is specifically designed for issues that benefit from intervention during growth and development. Dr. Weeks treats the following conditions with early orthodontic intervention at our Oviedo practice:

Crossbites: When upper teeth close inside lower teeth, the jaw can grow asymmetrically. A palatal expander can correct crossbites during growth, avoiding potential surgical correction in adulthood.

Severe Crowding: When the jaw is too narrow to accommodate incoming permanent teeth, early expansion can create space and allow teeth to erupt naturally, potentially avoiding extractions later.

Protruding Front Teeth: Children with prominent upper front teeth are at significantly higher risk for dental trauma—especially active kids in Oviedo’s sports programs. Early treatment can reduce protrusion and protect vulnerable teeth.

Underbite: When the lower jaw grows ahead of the upper jaw, early intervention with growth modification appliances can redirect jaw development. Left untreated, some underbites require jaw surgery in adulthood.

Harmful Oral Habits: Thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting, and mouth breathing can cause open bites and altered jaw development. Habit-breaking appliances, often used in Phase 1, help redirect growth before permanent damage occurs.

Impacted Teeth: When permanent teeth are blocked from erupting, early intervention can create a pathway for them to come in naturally. The American Dental Association notes that early detection and management of impacted teeth leads to better outcomes.

The Phase 1 Treatment Process

Evaluation: Bring your child to our Oviedo office for a free orthodontic evaluation. Dr. Weeks will examine your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite using digital X-rays and clinical assessment. He’ll explain what he observes and whether Phase 1 treatment would benefit your child—or whether monitoring and waiting is the better approach.

Treatment: If Phase 1 is recommended, Dr. Weeks will design a customized treatment plan. Common Phase 1 appliances include palatal expanders, partial braces (on specific teeth), space maintainers, and habit-breaking devices. Treatment typically lasts 9–18 months.

Resting Phase: After Phase 1, there’s a period of monitoring and observation while remaining baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth continue to erupt. During this time, a retainer or space maintainer may be worn.

Phase 2 (If Needed): When all permanent teeth have erupted (typically ages 11–14), Dr. Weeks will re-evaluate and determine whether Phase 2 treatment—comprehensive braces or Invisalign®—is necessary. Because Phase 1 addressed the underlying problem, Phase 2 is often shorter and simpler than it would have been without early intervention.

Benefits of Early Treatment for Oviedo Children

Oviedo families are invested in their children’s health and development, and early orthodontic treatment offers meaningful advantages when it’s genuinely needed:

  • Guide jaw growth: Influence the size and position of the upper and lower jaws while they’re still developing.
  • Create space for permanent teeth: Reduce or eliminate the need for tooth extractions later.
  • Reduce trauma risk: Correct protruding front teeth that are vulnerable to injury during sports and active play—important for the many young athletes in Oviedo’s youth programs.
  • Correct harmful habits: Address thumb-sucking and tongue-thrust before they cause permanent skeletal changes.
  • Improve self-esteem: Address obvious dental issues during formative childhood years.
  • Simplify future treatment: Phase 1 can make Phase 2 (comprehensive braces) shorter, easier, and less costly.
  • Potentially avoid surgery: Some jaw discrepancies that require surgical correction in adults can be treated non-surgically during childhood growth.

Does My Child Definitely Need Phase 1 Treatment?

Not necessarily—and Dr. Weeks is transparent about this. Many children who come in for an age-7 evaluation do not need Phase 1 treatment. In these cases, we place your child in our complimentary monitoring program, checking their development at regular intervals until the optimal time for comprehensive treatment arrives.

Dr. Weeks recommends Phase 1 only when there’s a clear clinical benefit—when waiting would allow a problem to worsen or become significantly more difficult to treat. If your child doesn’t need early treatment, we’ll tell you honestly and save you the cost and time. This approach reflects our commitment to the Oviedo community: recommending treatment only when it’s truly in the patient’s best interest.

Early Treatment Cost and Financial Options

Phase 1 treatment at Weeks Orthodontics typically ranges from $1,500 to $4,000, depending on the complexity of the case and the appliances required. If Phase 2 treatment is later needed, the combined investment is factored into a comprehensive plan.
